Lime Green Peridot :: Modern Birthstone for August :: Part II

If ever there were a birthstone intended to create attention,
it would have to be the startling Peridot,
that lusciously lime green gem which is the modern birthstone for August.
Love it or loathe it, it is a colour not to be treated gently,
and I, for one, quite absolutely adore this lively tone.
But let's have a look to learn a little more about Peridot's history...

Would you Like to Live Here? :: vertical lines outside / horizontal inside...

Richly-red ironbark over-scaled posts express a very vertical line
at this newly built house at the bayside suburb of Elwood in Melbourne.
Designed by architect Nicholas Wright,
the verticality injects a dramatic sense of movement to the exterior.

hello :: i'm back...

Just popping in to say hello,
and to the many email queries,
yes, I am still here, and life is slowly settling back into ordered chaos,
as distinct from disordered chaos,
which it has been for the last few weeks.

But both father and husband are now doing well,
and my wonderful clients have been so incredibly supportive
and understanding about being utterly neglected,
that I am fairly in awe of just how wonderful the human spirit can be.

And as if to symbolise new beginnings,
this beautiful wattle tree in my front garden
has erupted into the most impossibly golden balls of yellow blossom,
with a sweet scent quite intoxicatingly delicious.

Still to come,
and snuck in just before August tolls his last bells,
giving way to Spring here in Australia,
is the birthstone of the month post for Peridot...
stay tuned....

A Wistaria-covered White Cottage with Warmth and Style...

Have always loved bagged brick,
(as distinct from the heavier rendered finish),
whereupon the charming outlines of the masonry underneath
can still be discerned.
And this delightful cottage at South Yarra,
freshly on the market for early spring,
is a wonderful example of just how rustically elegant it can be.
Of course, having wistaria clambering on the verandah posts
is always going to make it especially gorgeous,
to my way of thinking,
but this cottage continues the charm on the interior as well.
Come inside and see...

Red Sardonyx :: Traditional Birthstone for August :: part I

Running very behind on my birthstone of the month post,
because it seems August is fairly running away from me!
Too many projects, too little time;
but the beautiful stones of this month demand attention,
for they are far too interesting to ignore.

The traditional stone for August is a Sardonyx,
an agate striped in luscious lines of reds, oranges, whites & browns.
The modern stone for August is a Peridot,
that gem of extraordinary greenness.

We shall look at Peridots later,
but first,
let's find out a little more about the traditional Sardonyx birthstone ...

Afternoon Tea Baking :: Sour Cream Scones + Rose Tea

One of the delights which we happened upon at Raffles Hotel
was their signature blend of rose tea.
So I couldn't resist buying a little tin to bring back with us.
And what could be more fitting as an accompaniment
than freshly made scones?

Lines, Texture, Patterning :: Twin Peaks House :: New Work by JCB

In a nod to the surrounding streetscape,
of late Victorian & Edwardian gabled houses
surrounded by verdant greenery,
this new work in Hawthorn (Melbourne) by Jackson Clements Burrows
explores the playful forms of lines in contemporary architecture,
as a means of "settling into" an older setting.

A Heavenly Stair :: the beauty of Wrought Iron

A beautiful stair is one of the most fun elements of architecture,
I think.
And just how wonderful is this wrought iron balustraded beauty?
The curling tendrils of iron mimic the sinuous sweep of the staircase itself.

And in utter contrast,
just to play with the eye,
the day bed's angular lines sweep in the opposite direction
to the organic staircase,
highlighting the fabulous lines of each element.

Do you like it?

Just Something Fun....a penchant for Glamour...

Just as fabulous,
and just as poignant, today
as this must have been
when it appeared on the cover of
the illustrious Vogue magazine in 1943,
John Rawlings' photograph is utterly timeless in its
observation of the female desire for glamour.
Have we changed, do you think, just a little?

Koyaanisqatis :: in a standing ovation for Philip Glass Ensemble in the revamped Hamer Hall

While I am still sulking about the loss of my Singapore images,
attending the premiere of the Qatsi trilogy last night,
at the newly revamped Hamer Hall,
was a pretty good distraction.

Not sure whether I was more enamoured with seeing Philip Glass
and his ensemble live on stage,
performing the music to the cult 1982 film Koyaanisqatsi,
or by the delight of the fabulous renovation by A.R.M.,
which celebrated the entire era of the late 70s/ early 80s
with a generous nod to gold, orange and timber.
